No two bags are the same! Hiptipico prides itself on uniqueness and authenticity. Every Hiptipico product is 100% handmade and has the human touch of the weaver and maker in each stitch. This makes our products uniquely charming and distinct from factory-made accessories. No two are exactly the same and imperfections are to be expected and appreciated.
Our convertible clutch bags are part of our Small Business Collection which features products crafted and designed by Maya artisans themselves in small home workshops. These artisanal workshops are owned by indigenous families who have their entire production established.
Many of you might know that Semana Santa [Holy Easter Week] is usually the busiest season for many vendors in Panajachel. The hotels are full, tourists fill the streets, and artisans are able to sell enough to provide financial security for many months. In preparation, many take out loans and invest in new inventory. This year, Semana Santa was canceled due to COVID, and our long-term artisan partner Doña Zoila finds herself in a tough economic position.
Since our Hiptipico production is also slower during this time, we thought about showing you some unique inventory Doña Zoila designed herself to sell during Semana Santa. This will be a way for us to restock this week while we wait for the next round of bags and poufs. Your purchase will GREATLY help her push out the inventory and have money for her family to survive comfortably during this unknown time.
Hiptipico’s relationship with these long-term partners is built on trust, transparency, and mutual respect. Purchasing items with these vendors support a small local business, motivates local entrepreneurial spirits, and stimulates the local economy.
Our Small Business Collection was created to support the creativity, ingenuity, and passion of local Guatemalan businesses while preserving Maya culture and traditions.
Origin: San Andrés Semetabaj
Ethnicity: Maya Kaqchiquel
Zoila grew up the small town of San Andres, just up the mountainside from Panajachel and her husband is originally from a village 6 hours away called Todos Santos. They eventually met in Panajachel when Julian moved to the tourist town to open a traditional handicrafts store with his parents. Now, Zoila and Julian together continue to run the family business in Panajachel, bringing in the unique vibe of Julian’s hometown. The combination of years of professional experience and a trained eye make for an extremely curated shop. The couple have been married for over 20 years and have four beautiful children who also help out at the family store when they are done with their studies.
