My first artisan visit: Reconnecting with my roots and my people

Reminiscing with Amy Joy ūüĆļ

I have officially been in Lake Atitlan for one month now, where has the time gone?!  I wanted to say thank you for such a warm welcome, support and positivity throughout Hiptipico's transition.  You are all such a big part of Hiptipico, and this experience!

To be completely honest, this transition was not easy, it meant leaving my comfort zone, and leaving Canada. I went back and forth between comfort and calling, but here I am, with a big smile on my face because I know I’m standing where I am meant to be.

I want to use this space to share my Guatemalan experiences with you, and I¬†will start off with my first artisan visit to Santa Catarina Palop√≥ with¬†our¬†long-term artisan partner¬†Do√Īa Teresa and her family! ¬†

For those of you who don't know, Do√Īa¬†Teresa was one of the first artisan families Alyssa¬†partnered with for Hiptipico.¬†Do√Īa¬†Teresa, to this day, creates all of Hiptipico‚Äôs greeting cards as well as our dust¬†bags that we lovingly wrap every single package in!¬†

Santa Catarina Palopo - Greeting Cards and Climb

The¬†walk to her house was very steep, we made our way along a narrow path surrounded by nature tones of greenery and magenta flowers.¬†Once we arrived, Do√Īa Teresa and her daughters Lupita and Lisa greeted us with warm smiles.¬† They were beautifully dressed for the occasion in their huipil blouses and corte skirts¬†with the traditional¬†liston¬†head wrap¬†that represented their town of Santa Catarina Palop√≥, they were simply elegant.

Santa Catarina Palopo - Dona TeresaAfter a round of hugs and catching up, Do√Īa Teresa began to show me the true behind-the-scenes moment of how she creates her art.¬†She started off by showing me the urdidora, which is a tool used to separate the thread before weaving.¬† She gracefully weaved black thread back and forth between the wooden pegs, creating a criss-cross pattern.¬† When it was my turn, I came to realize it‚Äôs not as easy as it looks hehe. ūüßĶ¬†Urdidora in Santa Catarina, Guatemala

Next, Do√Īa Teresa tied her backstrap loom¬†to the courtyard tree and wrapped the other end around her waist.¬†She began to weave intricately with multiple colored threads, choosing the patterns and colors all by memory.¬†I was simply awestruck by her gracefulness¬†and creativity.¬†¬†When I asked her what her favorite color is she responded with:¬†"me gusta el rojo." And sure enough, she was weaving using her favorite red thread which I¬†found to be¬†really special. Everything is done with so much care and thoughtfulness.

This journey has led me to a deeper understanding of who I am, as a Guatemalan and as an Artist. Ever since I was a young girl I was drawn to creativity and colour, I would express myself through photography, music and fashion. I never understood where this creativity came from, until now. I am realizing that this love of creativity stems from my roots and from the artisans who inspired me as a little girl. I truly believe that my creative journey has just begun, and I can't wait to see what will unfold in this new chapter in Guatemala.

Meeting Do√Īa Teresa and¬†her family was such a beautiful experience, I got to see first-hand how the entire family has been touched by Hiptipico.¬†From Do√Īa Teresa to her daughters Lisa and Lupita, and their other 6 siblings Hiptipico has touched so many lives.¬†The fact that I get to continue this legacy, simply leaves me without words.¬†ūüíõ¬†
