ORIGIN: EL TRIUNFO, PUJIJIL
ETHNICITY: MAYA KAQCHIQUEL

Ten women in El Triunfo, an isolated community in the western highlands of Sololá, gathered together to form a weaving cooperative. Juana, the founder of this women’s group, is the only female in her community that speaks Spanish and got up enough courage to leave the village to look for more business opportunities. Through the sale of hand-woven and hand-crafted goods, they have united to support their families and preserve their culture. The women use the art of back strap weaving to express their cultural identity, create their unique clothing, and generate income for their families.
