It’s a good day to be Indigenous (or Indigenous People’s Day if you prefer) on every second Monday in October
It’s the second Monday in October and that means Native people across the country are celebrating Indigenous People's Day.
So far 60 cities (and counting), four states (Minnesota, Vermont, Alaska and South Dakota) and many college and university campuses officially declared the second Monday of October as Indigenous People's Day. Remember some cities abolished Columbus Day and other cities continue to acknowledge that lost sailor along with Indigenous People's Day.
More cities are recognizing the day for Native people. After being rejected year after year since 2015 Mayor Holt of Oklahoma City signed off on the proclamation. A win for the supporters, especially Live Indigenous OK. Tacoma, Washington and Rochester, New York are new cities added to the list.
With these major wins comes huge celebrations. Nashville and San Francisco will be gearing up for their first year, too. To get your Indigenous People's Day celebration on, below is a list of events in metropolitan cities (with original lands) organized by time zones. Some cities will start celebrating as early as Friday, Oct. 5 so make sure to check out your local calendar. You can also tune in with Global Indigenous Wisdom Summit on Facebook Live and listen to Indigenous leaders if you can’t make it to a celebration.
